Kirsty Mitchell’s late mother Maureen was an English teacher who spent her life inspiring generations of children with imaginative stories and plays. Following Maureen’s death from a brain tumour in 2008, Kirsty channelled her grief into her passion for photography.

She retreated behind the lens of her camera and created Wonderland, an ethereal fantasy world. The photographic series began as a small summer project but grew into an inspirational creative journey.

‘Real life became a difficult place to deal with, and I found myself retreating further into an alternative existence through the portal of my camera,’ said the artist. (read the rest here).

Emissio is a series of images that show the interrelationship between the everyday, and banal, through to the sublime. A series of images of what at first appear as nebulae from distant regions of our galaxy, are, on closer inspection, images of iridescent oil spills on road surfaces.

The series explores the aesthetics of astrophotography through using conventions derived from Hubble images and highlights the ways in which the astrophotograph itself is highly constructed.

Representation through photography even scientifically can be highly altered and manipulated and not be a true representation of the scene observed.

Emissio explores the discussions around the indexicality of the medium, expounded by Charles Sanders Pierce, and the ways in which changing technologies capture light colour and the temporal.

The title Emissio is derived from the Latin: Emission and is defined not only by emissions of petrol but also to energy, such as heat, light or radio waves, emitted from a source.

It might look like something went horribly wrong in the images above, but the psychedelic colors and patterns are actually deliberate. Peter Hoffman coated his negatives with a tiny bit of gasoline.

After letting it burn for a few split seconds, Peter quickly extinguishes the flame and prints the image from the newly ‘ruined’ negative.

Using the Image Blender app on his phone, Daniella Zalcman created double exposure images of New York and London. The idea for the project came to her when she moved from New York to London.

After a successful Kickstarter campaign, she’s now launched a book called NY + London.

Jean-Baptiste Courtier is a young photographer working and living in Paris. Originally from North of France, he arrived in Paris searching for something, but without any precise idea. After working in radio stations and sound studios, it was when he started working in a model agency that his interest for photography was born. Courtier’s work corresponds to something fun that he dreams to see in real life. He shoot his pictures in a traditional way with a large format camera, 4x5 films. His photographs aim to capture something he has done in the real life and represent a personal challenge, like a performance or a magic tric. Courtier wishes to express through his work some kind of poetry: “Frankly, I’m quite égoistic in the way I work. Words Become Dancing Sculptures by Ebon Heath

Ebon Heath is a talented wordsmith, but not by the typical definition. The master of words creates laser-cut sculptures that bring life to letters that are otherwise stagnant on a page. Living and working between Brooklyn, Bali, and Berlin, the graphic designer and art director is also well versed in sculptures, mobiles, and photography. His typography sculptures are a magical transformation of the written word into what he describes as a “new language of physical type.” He liberates the letters from the printed page and gives them a three-dimensional existence with which viewers can interact.

To develop each piece, Heath takes concepts of typography and body language and fuses the two together, creating an artwork in which words and bodies live and exist in the same space. His intentions are to create a visual experience for the viewer in which the typography and the natural motions combine to tell the same expressive story. Although he developed the original concept, Heath doesn’t create these pieces on his own. He depends on a team of collaborators to help make his vision a reality, including dancers and choreographers who identify the natural body movements and curves that become the shape of the sculptures, and mechanical engineers and fabricators who develop and build the actual structures. Heath says, “I want our typography to jump, scream, whisper, and dance, versus lay flat, dead and dormant, to be used and discarded with no concern for its intricate beauty of form, function, and meaning.”
